History

September 17th, 2000 will be remembered as the official birthdate of ‘the shoreline’ church of San Clemente. However, God had been pulling it together for ten years prior to that date...

Some people at ‘the shoreline’ were a part of a Bible study in Dana Point back in 1990. It was a grass roots group of surfers and beach people who shared a desire to study the Bible and fellowship together. Eventually the group grew to more than 100 people and saw many come to Christ, and many others grow in their faith. The study eventually disbanded after a couple of years, but the connection of the people and their desire to know and live by the Bible continued.

George and Cheryl Hulse met at that study (it was held in Cheryl’s family home) and were married in November 1991. George had recently returned from the ASP Tour, the world tour for surfing, where he had competed for four years. Cheryl was back from school in Santa Barbara and serving as interim Youth Pastors at Crown Valley Covenant Church. They served together as Youth Pastor at Crown Valley Covenant Church from April 1991 to December 1999. After graduating from Biola University in May 1995, their prayers intensified in asking for God’s direction. God used the encouragement and prayers of Boogie and Stephanie Rose of Young Life, and Scott and Stephanie Hannah of Campus Crusade for Christ to clarify His call upon George and Cheryl Hulse. After four years, it became clear that God was calling them to missions right in their own beach community. God gave the vision for ‘the shoreline’ and a small group stepped out in faith. The core group was rallied and formed as the vision was shared and discussed, and ‘the shoreline’ church of San Clemente was born.

The vision is simple. God wants to work in His way. He wants His Son to get the glory, His Word to be proclaimed, and His Spirit to be the power in which all ministry is done. We know from having grown up in the community that the church needs to be casual, artistic, cutting-edge, genuine, and spiritual. It is now a matter of following God’s lead, and He has put some dreams in our hearts. Some of our dreams are:

    * to see artists share the gospel with their talents
    * to see international visitors studying the Bible in a center in San Clemente
    * to see children growing up as influencers for Christ in godly homes
    * to see Christians starting businesses that connect with the community
    * to see worship songs created and shared
    * to see people’s lives transformed by God’s word.

We believe that God can do all of this and more when He is in the lead! Therefore, we subscribe to a philosophy that says ‘let God be God,’ and we will be like those in Luke 5:11 who, “When they had brought their boats to the shoreline, they left everything and followed Jesus.”
